Underground water lake estimated older than 10-thousand years discovered by German Geologist in Namibia

Another discovery in Namibia, German geologist Martin Quinger said to the Algemeine Zeitung - a German daily - he discovered a underground lake capable supplying water to the Ohangwena region in north central Namibia for the next 400 years. The area situated on the border between Namibia and Angola is lately regular in the news due to all the floods. Quinger said to the AZ the lake is estimated to be at a depth around 280 and 350 meters, while the 10-thousand year old lake is around 25 kilometers wide.

The water is 100%  pure, and fit for human consumption, and will last the community/residents of Ohangwena  for at least 400 years. The costs to utilize the water is unclear, but could run into millions NAD. The area where the lake was found is situated between Eenhana and Okongo.

The northern area is known for it's underground water, of which many I believe is still not even discovered. The two most famous lakes are the Otjikoto and Guinas  close to Tsumeb in the Otjikoto region. Both lakes are famous diving spots for technical divers, but need to be done under professional supervision, as according to folklore the bottoms of both lakes were still to be discovered. I was part of a dive expedition during 2010 under the supervision of Steff Viljoen and Don Shirley from South Africa and author of the book "Raising the dead"

The water offers the ideal diving environment as underwater visibility is clear for between 50 and 70 meters. One of the most recent discoveries was Dragons Breath close to Grootfontein in the Otjozundjupa region, The underwater lake needs specialized equipment as divers had to decent in the belly of the earth of almost a 100 meters, before touching the water surface.

More on the new lake as more info is availed to the media. Stay tuned as i will keep you posted on the discovery.

isolated and unique diving spots
in Namibia.
since most caves and underwater lakes
are on private land, Steff's experience
and contacts is highly recommended as almost
all land owners do not allow divers without supervision.

  1. I am liking the new discovery at Eenhana-Okongo. Could become a worthwhile project.
