More than a 100 learners from various High Schools in Windhoek gathered this morning at UN House to act as various country representatives during the conference. The Children represent various UN member states and will act as presidents or senior government officials deliberating the importance of protecting refugees.
The topic is appropriate as the continent is home to more refugees than any other continent.
As far as the legal framework is concerned the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees is the foundation of international refuge law. which contains a definition of the term "refugee" and sets the minimum standards for the treatment of persons who are found to qualify for refugee status.
The group of learners was welcomed by UNHCR Representative Dr. Lawrence Mgbangson en Deputy Minister of Education David Namwandi.
The conference comes to an end tomorrow.
