A Night out with the Windhoek City Police.

Community Policing and Problem Solving or in short "COPPS 94.1" is a joint venture between Windhoek based Commercial Radio station Kosmos 94.1 and the Windhoek City Police to bring the real incidents to you via radio. The City Police is visible and most Windhoekers know their toll free number by heart. We see them drive, walk, shop, talk and mingle in the community. But what are these men and women in blue go through when they are called out to a scene?

Remember they are married, they have a boy or girl friend, they have parents, children, family just like us, and just like the criminals and complainants so what makes them different in our community?

They have to deal with all kinds of crime! The City Police must be there when you call them, if they take long to arrive after you called - it is their fault, poor service and all kinds of insults, If they arrest a suspect they are insulted threatened and even belittled by the criminal. If a women was raped they have to face the poor women's agony, they have to keep her going till medical assistance arrives, if a person is murdered the City Police is at fault because they did not respond in time, when a kambashu is destroyed in a fire, the City Police must provide shelter.

These are some of the many matters the City Police must face by the very same communities they serve. The reality is we as residents often invite criminals to do what they do best, crime! We invite them to steal by leaving valuables unattended, walking alone at night, taking shortcuts through riverbeds and bushes and the list can go on.

this very same element that rob, murder, rape, assault and commit other crimes in the community are not coming from other planets during the night, they are walking, eating, drinking, staying even working among us. And by hiding them from the law, we create a serious problem for our own safety.
