The cause or causes on what started the fire on board the Chamarel during the night of August 8 is still unknown. Although speculations that the fire started on her bridge cannot be confirmed nor denied as both the Namibian authorities and the ship's owners are still in the dark. The crew of 51 ( mostly French citizens ) were all rescued by a Fisheries patrol vessel who was in the vicinity of the Chamarel north of Hentiesbay. According to reliable sources the 135 meter vessel ran ashore. As of late yesterday afternoon no oil or other pollution were recorded.
