One person died and two sustained slight injuries after
a VW Golf rammed into an oncoming truck
on the Western Bypass on the outskirts of Windhoek around
03h00 this morning. The accident could have prevented if
the driver of the VW with a Windhoek registration plate,
did not drive on the wrong side of
the double lane road. So what made him drive
on the wrong side of the road? drinking? arrogance? ignorance?
or was he on a suicide mission? Many unanswered questions.
Way too many people
die on Namibian roads in Motor vehicle related
accidents. Despite various campaigns run by
authorities, it is clear and evident, IT DOES NOT WORK.
What are the solutions then? Stiffer penalties?
suspension of driver's license? confiscate reckless driver's
vehicles? name and shame? no tolerance for drinking and driving?
One thing is for sure , regardless what authorities say or do,
IT IS NOT EFFECTIVE!
driving on our roads be it to work, shop, leisure, holiday, it
remains a live threatening gamble to drive on our roads. Going to work tomorrow
is not a guarantee I will arrive safely there, or even back home.
This country's leaders should sit down and make take remedial
actions. Not only sit like the previous consultative
meetings at the coast where all of them looked important on the news paper
clippings. But in reality it was a waste
of tax payers and donor money.
I think, I start now to understand why the Namibian population
doesn't grow, they kill themselves on the countries roads. The only winners
in this scenario are the undertakers, as they got themselves a
constant flow of clients. Be it reckless drivers, drunk drivers or innocent
fellow road users, there will be always coffins ready.
