Namibian youth plagued with drugs, alcohol and peer pressure

Namibian Children called on authorities to intervene with the thousands of shebeens and drug lords currently dominating the social arena. Almost every week a drug or alcohol related murder takes place across the country, yet the plight and calls by the public and learners alike seems to fall on deaf ears.
Nampa spoke to the deputy mayor of Windhoek who was the facilitator of the first ever National Children's Forum addressing topics that hamper the countries development. Not surprising that the free roaming of drug lords and thousands of uncontrolled shebeens ( informal drinking houses or waterholes as they are also known )  took the center stage. On why the police and law enforcement officials do not act upon tip-offs from the public to act and raid houses known for drug distribution remains a mystery. The public lately make use of a local daily's sms page to ask why the police do not act or raid some houses that are center in drug selling and supplying.

Heroes Day approaching August 26 Namibians are preparing for the day that marked the beginning of our independence 23 years ago.

Namibia's Independence on March 21 1990 did not come cheap nor easy as the liberation struggle that started August 26 1966 claimed many people, young, old, men and women. I travelled to historic places during Namibia's fight for freedom, spoke to several former "PLAN" fighters, while some of them escorted me to battle sites between the former SA armed forces and the combatants. The battles were fierce, many lost their lives, relatives, husbands, wives and children. But the struggle was not in vain, as we now celebrate 23 years of independence from the former Apartheid South Africa. Namibia press will soon bring you the interviews, stories and "jubelation" of those who survived to tell the stories of fallen heroes and heroines. We walked in their foot steps, we walked on the former battle grounds, we paid a visit to the old grave sites to bring you the stories of our freedom fighters.

Tragic death on western bypass outside Windhoek. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3HtXS7cPBM&feature=youtu.be

Tragic death on the Western Bypass on the outskirts of the city.

According to Chief Abraham Kanime from Windhoek City Police this is the 12th on this road in less than a year. In my opinion, Namibia boasts with the best road infrastructure on the continent, it is more an issue of drivers attitude that contributes to the fatalities.

Grim Reaper feast continues as two more people died during the early morning hours of Sunday in Windhoek.

One person died and two sustained slight injuries after
a VW Golf rammed into an oncoming truck
on the Western Bypass on the outskirts of Windhoek around
03h00 this morning. The accident could have prevented if
the driver of the VW with a Windhoek registration plate,
did not drive on the wrong side of
the double lane road. So what made him drive
on the wrong side of the road? drinking? arrogance? ignorance?
or was he on a suicide mission? Many unanswered questions.

Way too many people
die on Namibian roads in Motor vehicle related
accidents. Despite various campaigns run by
authorities, it is clear and evident, IT DOES NOT WORK.
What are the solutions then? Stiffer penalties?
suspension of driver's license? confiscate reckless driver's
vehicles? name and shame? no tolerance for drinking and driving?

One thing is for sure , regardless what authorities say or do,
IT IS NOT EFFECTIVE!

driving on our roads be it to work, shop, leisure, holiday, it
remains a live threatening gamble to drive on our roads. Going to work tomorrow
is not a guarantee I will arrive safely there, or even back home.

This country's leaders should sit down and make take remedial
actions. Not only sit like the previous consultative
meetings at the coast where all of them looked important on the news paper
clippings. But in reality it was a waste
of tax payers and donor money.

I think, I start now to understand why the Namibian population
doesn't grow, they kill themselves on the countries roads. The only winners
in this scenario are the undertakers, as they got themselves a
constant flow of clients. Be it reckless drivers, drunk drivers or innocent
fellow road users, there will be always coffins ready.
