Windhoek not spared from wild and veld fires due to dry vegetation. Most fires are caused by arsonists.

Veld fires this time of the year remain an issue of fire safety for the Windhoek Emergency Services. Despite the dry vegetation that is prone to a spark resulting in fires that could destroy property and lives, It is home owner's responsibility to ensure there is a safe space between his property and a dry vegetation as this decrease the chances of a house being destroyed by a fire. Fighters of the City had their hands full to contain several fires. Most  of the fires are caused by pure negligence, and cost the council millions annually. This money could have been used for more infrastructural improvement like more water points for the informal settlements, more streetlights, more play parks to mention a few.
